Prologue
In 2003, Xinjing Third Women's Prison.
Now that six months have passed, Xinjing is hot like a volcano in eruption. The government has allocated money for heatstroke prevention. Prisoners are lining up to receive mung bean soup and ice cubes to relieve the heat.
The hot wind blows, and a few weeds on the ground are blown up. On a clean concrete step, a girl about five years old is sitting on the steps and eating popsicles.
She wore a small skirt made of prison uniform fabric, her hair tied into two braids.
"Little Pearl! Still eating!"
A loud voice came out from behind. A middle-aged man with a big and round waist in prison guard clothes walked over and picked up the girl. The girl was still licking the ice in her hand. The middle-aged man reached out and squeezed the girl's. face.
"Someone is coming to pick you up today. Are you happy?"
"Happy!"
The girl was born in prison. The woman who gave birth to her died after her birth. The girl has no family. The people in prison pooled the money to buy her baby necessities and didn't dare to give her a name, because her mother left her a string of pearl necklaces. They kept calling her Little Pearl, and they raised her till 5 yrs old by exception.
Not long ago, there were instructions from the head that someone was finally willing to adopt Little Pearl, and they will come to pick her up today.
The third women’s prisoners are mostly on death row or on life sentence, except for new prisoners, the gate is basically closed.
That afternoon, four or five people worked together to push the heavy iron door open, and Little pearl reluctantly walked out of the prison gate carrying a small schoolbag made of prison uniforms, turning her head one step at a time.
She looked forward and was greeted by a black Audi, a well-mannered man, and her new name.
